NZBG 2002 jul 010.jpg (53384 bytes) Almost a year previously to the day the USS Artemis was launched for the first time. See how far she's come compared to this picture.
NZBG 2002 jul 020.jpg (26615 bytes) There are still major problems with the manoeuvreability of the ship. A sheet of aluminium (approximtely 200% of the scale rudder size) was tested. This significantly reduced the turning circle to about 3 boat lengths.
NZBG 2002 jul 030.jpg (60921 bytes) Raynor Johnston (blue hat) who kindly drove up from Hamilton to meet us talks to Stuart Calvert. He also skipper the USS Artemis for a while and kindly shot some holes in the USS Gearing
NZBG 2002 jul 050.jpg (33213 bytes) The rotating gun on the USS Artemis would be great about now.
NZBG 2002 jul 060.jpg (36250 bytes) A shot from the USS Artemis lands astern of the USS Gearing.
NZBG 2002 jul 070.jpg (34605 bytes) Art's IJN Shimakaze also made in onto the water for the first time. She had both her forward guns working and was thus able to inflict a bit of damage on the USS Artemis. The USS Artemis was able to get her on back with 1 on the waterline shot and 2 belows. The USS Artemis captain graciously allowed the IJN Shimakaze to be rescued for the sake of saving his unwaterproofed radio gear that was stripped from the USS Gearing for the occasion.
