Funnel construction. By Stuart Calvert

NZBG USS Artemis funnel 01.jpg (14305 bytes) After drawing the funnel section for the Artemis in AutoCAD (I use 2000LT) I did an array to get 4 sections. I also drew a centreline with 2 points to drill holes for dowels to hold the sections together.
NZBG USS Artemis funnel 02.jpg (22489 bytes) The three sections were cut out and 2 thick walled aluminiun rods were also cut to the appropriate length. The rods are slightly longer than the total offset distance of the first and third sections so they will stick out the bottom of the funnel, See below.
NZBG USS Artemis funnel 03.jpg (21005 bytes) Side and bottom views of the funnel frame. The rods protrude out the bottom of the funnel to allow for easier and stronger mounting to the superstructure deck. I used normal thick Cynoacrylate (CA) glue.
NZBG USS Artemis funnel 04.jpg (17354 bytes) 0.5mm aluminium was wrapped around the funnel frame. The dimsensions were calculated from the plan profile (for the height) and by crudely wrapping a steel ruler around the outside of one the sections (for the length of the rectangular sheet). Mark the centre on the sheet and the centre on the top and bottom sections and then bend. It is advisable to lightly sand the aluminium before bending as it aides gluing and painting.
NZBG USS Artemis funnel 05.jpg (22475 bytes) Top and bottom views of the funnel with the ends taped together with duct tape. Note the top (left) view of the funnel: the top of the aluminium is approx 25mm from the top section of the frame. The inside will be painted flat black.

NZBG USS Artemis funnel 08.jpg (20614 bytes) The centreline and hole positions marked on the deck with the funnel ready to go.
NZBG USS Artemis funnel 09.jpg (19357 bytes) The funnel installed and glued. I forgot to cut holes in the deck for ladders to the second deck. Luckily it was too hard to do these after. See Below.
